Work is integral to human functioning (Fouad, 2007) and is an indispensable means of improving a person’s sense of worth and belonging. Work also provides the power and control that come along with having financial means and is central to human life as a tool for socialization, a source for social discourse, and as a buttress in the development of a person’s identity. Work does not happen outside the context of who we are as people with emotional lives and personal histories that may include traumatic experiences. In this workshop we will examine how trauma exposure infiltrates every aspect of the job search process, relationships on-the-job, and how it can impede a person’s ability to grow professionally.
Valerie Ashley is a trauma and certified EMDR therapist with a specialty in understanding how trauma impacts all aspects of work life from “knowing what you want to do when you grow up,” to benefitting from a sustainable, adult professional life.
In her 20+ years as a therapist, she has helped individuals reduce anxiety, process grief, and understand their trauma. While degrees and certifications speak to her educational and advanced credentials, the most important knowledge and skills she has acquired come from working firsthand with her clients. Ensuring that her clients feel safe, respected, validated, and heard, allows the relationship to grow and the therapy to be successful.
Valerie earned her master’s degree in Community and Trauma Counseling from Thomas Jefferson University and is Certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). Additionally, she is certified in Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse. Sites of her recent presentations include Bryn Mawr School of Social Work, Thomas Jefferson University’s Annual Trauma Conferences, and the National Career Development Association (NCDA).
