Research Associate Job Description

Overview.

The Trauma Research Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to improving the quality and distribution of knowledge about trauma treatment, seeking innovation for new approaches including arts, embodiment and neuroscience. As such, the Foundation undertakes activities such as professional education and postgraduate specialty training, including training and funding for cutting-edge research on trauma, its impact, and intervention modalities. This position is designed to support and participate in the building of an infrastructure for creating collaborative cutting-edge research. As the foundation grows, it is expected that responsibilities of the position will increase in sophistication. The primary supervisor for this position is the Chief Science Officer of the Foundation who has a dedicated track record of supporting the graduate work of potential research-oriented psychologists at all career stages. This position may be ideal for someone who has recently completed a BA or MA in a related field who has aspirations of pursuing doctoral level work that integrates research and practice in a mental-health related field.

Qualifications.

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or the equivalent, in a mental health-related field, such as psychology, social work, human development, or neuroscience.
  • Familiarity with academic search engines and databases
  • Familiarity with formal mental health and psychological science terminology and definitions.
  • Basic familiarity with research methodology and introductory statistics.
  • Undergraduate-level familiarity with biological bases of behavior and psychopathology.
  • Ability to write in a variety of tones, from public intellectual to formal academic.
  • Ability to self-direct work while seeking appropriate supervision.
  • Good relationship management and interpersonal skills, including self-advocacy.

Sample tasks/responsibilities.

  • Support scheduling and coordination of meetings.
  • Conduct basic background research (web review, literature review, quantitative analyses, etc) on factors relevant to trauma, research, and grant funding.
  • Support ongoing grants with preliminary review of proposals and grantee benchmarks.
  • Conduct quantitative data analysis on existing programs within TRF.
  • Support the Foundation in its building of a research infrastructure, including a process for advertising grant opportunities and managing documentation once grant awards have been made.
  • Liaise with the Foundation’s board and scientific advisory council.
  • Bridge with the Foundation’s other teams and initiatives, such as our professional educational offerings and programs, to integrate with our research goals.
  • Liaise with scholars and practitioners in the field.
  • Support the Foundation;s’s annual conference.
  • Coordinate the selection, scheduling, and contracting for scientific and clinical talks hosted by the organization.

Other commitments.

  • Domestic and international travel 4-6x/year.
  • Availability during work hours in the Eastern time zone.
  • Investment in the just and equal treatment of all humans, both directly and indirectly impacted by this work.
  • Ability to work in an environment that is regularly engaging in discussions of topics related to trauma.

Please note: The ideal candidate would be available full time, but the Foundation might consider two half-time candidates. The ideal candidate would also be available to start in late March-early April; however, given that this time frame dovetails with a time of transition for many likely candidates (e.g., graduation), the Foundation would be willing to consider a part-time start with transition to full time. Compensation includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance, short-and long-term disability, with expected full-time salary of approximately $60,000/year.
