This course is designed specifically for TRF’s Peer Counseling Project members. Join experienced peer counselor Waveney Richards as she reviews what you have learned, introduces new skills, and helps you develop your peer counseling techniques. After reviewing and discussing the peer counseling skills you have been working with, you will have the opportunity to be counseled in front of the group, give structured feedback and also practice your counseling skills in break-out rooms. To end the sessions, you will have time to reflect on your experience and share ideas about what was helpful, and challenges you may have faced. On non-meeting weeks, we invite you to practice the skills you have learned so you have the opportunity to hone your peer counseling skills.

This training will provide:

  • Ongoing support for TRF’s Peer Counseling Network
  • An opportunity to practice co-counseling in a safe space with the oversight of an experienced peer counselor
  • A place to ask questions, discuss experiences, and help to build your network of support as you continue your peer counseling journey

*To make this training accessible, we are pleased to offer scholarships. Apply here.

This program will be led by Waveney Richards, a colleague of Dr. Barbara Love.  Waveney has been a clinical psychologist for over 39 years, in full-time private practice since 1987 offering mental health services – psychotherapy for individuals and families, training and consultation for organizations.

Ms. Richards introduced Re-Evaluation counseling (RC) in Trinidad & Tobago and in other islands of the Caribbean thirty-four (34) years ago.  Being the only RC teacher, she developed an active community of thirty-five (35) co-counsellors, the number of which has grown, and, in time, she became the Area Reference Person (ARP), for Trinidad & Tobago, and subsequently, the Regional Reference Person, for the Caribbean. She has developed a group of peer counsellors in the Caribbean who lead support groups for parents, young people, teachers, men and women and she continues to develop leaders to take on this work in these communities. Since 1996 she has taught an annual course in the USA and the UK on building leadership in black communities, and has led workshops on Re-evaluation Counseling (RC) at the 1995 United Nations Women’s Conference in China. As a member of RC’s NGO United to End Racism (UER) she has led workshops in South Africa, USA, Barbados and Trinidad on Diversity, including eliminating racism. As a member of RC’s NGO Sustaining All Life (SAL), she was part of the SAL team at the 2016 United Nations Climate Change COP22 in Morocco.
